A Global Canvas for Artistic Freedom

Almine Rech

The Almine Rech Gallery, with its roots in Paris and branches across Europe, the United States, and Asia, has carved a unique niche in the global art scene. The gallery's distinctiveness lies not only in the diversity and quality of the art it presents but also in its commitment to artistic freedom, its visionary approach, and its dedication to nurturing emerging talent.

Almine Rech opened her first gallery in the Marais district of Paris in November 1989, with an exhibition centered on a James Turrell' Space Division' light piece. The gallery initially focused on Minimal, Perceptual, and Conceptual art, representing artists such as James Turrell, John McCracken, and Joseph Kosuth. Since 1995, Almine Rech has served as the sole director of the gallery, guiding its evolution and expansion.

Almine Rech believes that art is a space for freedom of expression. This belief is reflected in the gallery's mission to seek out and include new artists in its program continually. The gallery is a platform for artists to enjoy this freedom and use it to contribute to contemporary creativity. In this sense, the artists are visionaries who, through their work, write and anticipate history.

Over the years, the Almine Rech Gallery has expanded its spaces throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia. In 2006, the gallery relocated to the Marais in Paris with a group exhibition curated by French fashion designer and photographer Hedi Slimane. In 2008, a new gallery space was opened in Brussels, and in 2013, a new Paris space was launched in the Marais.

In 2014, the gallery inaugurated a space in London on Savile Row, Mayfair, which was later relocated to a larger space on Grosvenor Hill, Mayfair, in 2016, presenting a solo show by American artist Jeff Koons. The same year, the gallery opened its first space in Manhattan's Upper East Side with a Calder Picasso exhibition. A second New York gallery space is planned to open downtown (Tribeca) in September 2023.

The gallery's global reach extended to Asia in 2019 with the inauguration of a new space in Shanghai. In 2021, a second space was opened in Paris on Avenue Matignon, which was expanded in 2022, presenting a solo exhibition by American artist Alexander Calder. The gallery also established a temporary location in Aspen, Colorado, during the summer of 2021.

The Almine Rech Gallery has long-standing relationships with artists such as Joseph Kosuth, James Turrell, and De Wain Valentine. It has also started working with artists such as Farah Atassi, Oliver Beer, Andrea Marie Breiling, Genieve Figgis, Daniel Gibson, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, George Rouy, Vaughn Spann, Emma Stern, Claire Tabouret, Genesis Tramaine, Amanda Wall, Chloe Wise, Huang Yuxing, alongside established artists and Estates, such as John M Armleder, Karel Appel, Alexander Calder, Ha Chong-Hyun, Günther Förg, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Pablo Picasso, Antoni Tàpies, Mai-Thu, Richard Prince, Tom Wesselmann, and Kim Tschang-Yeul.

Through Almine Rech Editions, the gallery presents in-house published catalogs and editions featuring a broad collection of new and rare books. This platform allows the gallery to extend its reach beyond physical spaces, offering a printed newsletter magazine, collectibles, ceramics, music, goodies, and apparel.
