The Making of a Masterpiece: Behind the Scenes

Il Ponte Casa d'Aste

Il Ponte Casa d'Aste, a renowned art gallery and auction house, has been a significant player in the international art world since its establishment in 1970. Founded by Stefano Redaelli, the gallery is situated in the historical residence of Marquis Crivelli, Palazzo Crivelli, in the heart of Milan's Brera district. The name "Il Ponte", meaning "The Bridge", was chosen to emphasize the gallery's role as a connection between sellers and buyers in the art world.

Over the years, Il Ponte Casa d'Aste has been entrusted with prestigious consignments, such as Villa Borromeo in Senago, the engineer Stampa's legacy for Sant'Anna Hospital in Como, and Ca' d’Industria, Barattieri Castle in San Pietro in Cerro, and the clown Grock's heritage. These cultural inheritances were revealed to the public through the gallery's first photographic brochures, which served as invitations to the auctions.

In the early 1990s, Il Ponte ventured into the modern art experience by founding a parallel company, Il Ponte Modern Art. The furniture exhibition was entrusted to Alchimia, the architectural group led by Alessandro Mendini. This marked the beginning of the gallery's journey into the world of modern art.

One of the most significant international recognitions for Il Ponte came in 1999 with the sale of Renzo Mongiardino's legacy. The fascinating house-studio room reconstructions by architects Roberto Peregalli and Laura Rimini, assisted by the artists-craftsmen who had collaborated with Mongiardino, were immortalized in magazines all over the world, from Vogue Germany and AD France to the New York Times.

In the new millennium, Il Ponte continued to make strides with memorable auctions such as the Gino di Lora House sale, the Necchi Campiglio Legacy, and the historic Milanese club Società Artisti and Patriottica properties. The gallery also opened a new premises, ViaPitteriDieci, an industrial space covering over 3,000 square meters, designed to allow an increasingly broad public to become interested in auctions without an excessive financial commitment.

In recent years, Il Ponte has continued to innovate and adapt to the changing art world. The launch of the IlPonteLive platform and the implementation of increasingly accurate digital services have enabled a new way of enjoying the auction proposals. The gallery has also organized auctions of memorabilia from famous Italian personalities such as Mike Bongiorno and Giorgio Forattini, and the private collections of Mariuccia Mandelli (Krizia) and Philippe Daverio.

Il Ponte Casa d'Aste stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and its ability to inspire, challenge, and engage. Its commitment to showcasing a diverse range of art, fostering relationships with artists and institutions, and maintaining a dynamic auction programme has solidified its status as a beacon of the art world. As it looks to the future, Il Ponte Casa d'Aste will undoubtedly continue to be a vital part of the global art scene, championing the work of artists and contributing to the global discourse on art.
