Resonating Through Time: Echoing Expressions

MEYER KAINER

MEYER KAINER, a contemporary art gallery based in Vienna, has been a significant player in the international art scene since its establishment in the 1970s. Originally known as Galerie Metropol, the gallery has a long tradition in the reenactment of the Viennese Secession movement. In 1990, the gallery's focus shifted exclusively to contemporary art, showcasing some of the most influential artists of the period, including Bruce Nauman, Hanne Darboven, and Rosemarie Trockel, as well as emerging artists such as Charles Ray, Raymond Pettibon, and Andrea Fraser.

In 1999, the gallery, under the ownership and direction of Renate Kainer and Christian Meyer, relocated to Vienna’s emerging gallery district Eschenbachgasse and was renamed Galerie Meyer Kainer. The gallery has since been an active organizer of artist collaborations, performances, events, and numerous side projects, including the symposium "The Aesthetic Field" in 1992.

Presenting shows by Vienna’s leading contemporary artists like Franz West, Heimo Zobernig, Florian Pumhösl, and gelatin, alongside internationally renowned artists like Dan Graham, Liam Gillick, Rachel Harrison, and Amelie von Wulffen, has been a key aspect of the gallery’s activities within the young and dynamic Viennese art scene. The represented artists regularly exhibit in international museums and institutions, and several of them have been included in exhibitions such as documenta, the Venice Biennial, and Skulptur Projekte Münster.

MEYER KAINER is not just a space for showcasing art; it is also a platform for influencing and shaping the discourse around contemporary art. The gallery's exhibition program communicates the entire sweep of the modernist movement in America through its presentation of innovative and important works in both abstract and realist modes, bringing change into sharper focus.

MEYER KAINER stands as a beacon of contemporary art in Vienna. Its commitment to fostering artistic talent, promoting international artists, and nurturing a love for art among the public has made it a significant player in the global art scene. As it continues to evolve and expand, MEYER KAINER remains dedicated to its mission of supporting and promoting the work of innovative and pioneering artists.
