Igniting the Flame of Innovation

Karsten Schubert

Karsten Schubert London, a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of London's Soho, has been a prominent figure in the art world since its establishment in 1986. The gallery was founded by Karsten Schubert, a Berlin-born art enthusiast who dedicated his life to promoting artists from diverse backgrounds, with a particular focus on British artists. Schubert's vision and passion for art have been instrumental in shaping the gallery's reputation as a leading platform for modern and contemporary art.

The gallery represents a selection of prominent and emerging British artists, including Rose English, Kirsten Glass, Tess Jaray, Sarah Kogan, Cathie Pilkington, Frances Richardson, Charlotte Verity, and Alison Wilding. The gallery's commitment to these artists is reflected in its continuous exhibition program, which has showcased a wide range of artistic styles and themes over the years.

In January 2019, Karsten Schubert London launched Room 2, a new exhibition space located in a mid-eighteenth-century terraced house. This unconventional setting provides a unique platform for artists to exhibit their work in a domestic space, fostering a more intimate connection between the artwork and the viewer. The gallery's exhibition program focuses on close collaboration with artists to create thoughtful, select exhibitions.

Notable exhibitions hosted by the gallery include "Frank Kent: Days" and "Kirsten Glass: Night-Scented Stock." These exhibitions have not only showcased the diverse talents of the artists represented by the gallery but also contributed to a greater awareness of significant contemporary British art.

Beyond its exhibition program, Karsten Schubert London is also a publishing house. Ridinghouse, the gallery’s publications arm, is internationally recognized for its dedication to publishing the best of art writing and criticism, revisiting art history, and exploring individual artists and specific projects. Recent titles include "Reconstructing Cezanne: Sequence and Process in Paul Cezanne’s Works on Paper," "Cecily Brown: Shipwreck Drawings," and "The Outwardness of Art: Selected Writings of Adrian Stokes."

Karsten Schubert, the gallery's founder, passed away in 2019, but his legacy continues under the leadership of Managing Director Tom Rowland. Today, Karsten Schubert London remains committed to its founder's vision of promoting contemporary British art and fostering cultural exchange. As it looks to the future, the gallery will undoubtedly continue to champion the work of contemporary artists and contribute to the global discourse on contemporary art.
